I first became introduced to Alex on Instagram, I remember wanting one of her Mama Africa earrings and as quickly as she put them out is as quickly as they disappeared. Aside from her craftiness, her love of self is what attracted me to her.  She’s so aware of herself, and although she wasn’t always sure of who she was, her rawness and honesty about her journey and how flawed and not perfect she is, is what made her so relatable. I always say if you own all of  your faults and everything you do, no one will ever be able to use it against you.

Last week St. John’s University had an event where Dr. Stacy N.C. Grant was leading a conversation with Alex, I had the opportunity to be in the same room with her as she spoke about her life walk and journey. It was so refreshing to see all of the engaged eyes that she had in the room, everyone was locked in, I looked around several times in absolute awe, and no I wasn’t surprised, but it was so beautiful to see how every single person in the room clung on to her words, and every time she made a statement, the room echoed in rhythmic agreeance of snaps and mm-hmm’s. She was dropping so many gems and I made sure to catch them all. It felt so good to have someone who I’d consider a peer to have a platform and utilize in such a life changing, powerful way.

She shared so many things that evening. It touched my heart to see how just the mention of her daughter and her significant other brought so much light to her eyes. She is filled with so much love and it’s such a beautiful thing to have witnessed. She touched on the importance of giving your fellow Queens praise, which is oh so important to remember that there is enough room for all of us. “A candle doesn’t” lose it’s flame by lighting another.” She also mentioned a few that are now a few of my faves “Letting go does not always mean that you are losing”. “Stop hoarding your happy” “Being damaged is a choice” “You have to share what you are gaining” “You are never alone in your struggle”

My bedroom now looks like Mary Jane’s bedroom from (Being Mary Jane) post-it’s galore filled with positive affirmations and reassurances to get me throughout my day. lol

Thank you Alex, I want you to know that you are appreciated. You are also very much needed, you sharing your story has inspired so many to accept and live in their truths, and I am so thankful for the day that I stumbled upon your page, because that was the day you’ve become my sister in my head. Lol.

To keep up with Alex, follow her if you aren’t already on Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, her new blog, and also she started a Mommy & Me business with her little one that is so cool and has something for everyone, even the guys, check it out here. And to purchase her two books that make great gifts to either you or someone you love, Words From A Wanderer and Love In My Language.

And I will leave you guys with one of my favorite quotes of all time from her,

“I am not afraid of my truth anymore, and I will not omit pieces of me to make you comfortable”

Forever Stripped,

D. Wil xoxo
